Are all pintle hitches the same?

All pintle hitches are not created equal. With each manufacturer having their own view on manufacturing processes, designs and materials. Each manufacturer also has their own strengths and weaknesses, and different strategies on how to go to market. It makes perfect sense that their final products would each have their own personalities and flavor.

Are there different types of pintle hitches?

When it comes to pintle hitches, there are many types available from multiple manufacturers. Each type may vary in how it is mounted, how it is actuated, the materials that it if fabricated from and various other design aspects. Read below as we touch on each to the main types and discuss the applications and advantages of each type.

There are different ways of mounting, including rigid bolt on, receiver mount, channel mount and mounts that are installed through holes in the steel structure of the vehicle / trailer. Some absorb shock by use of air, some through use of heavy springs. Some can rotate in order to reduce binding seen in off road applications. There are hybrids that combine both pintle hitches and ball hitches to give the hitch more versatility. There are also specialty hitches like the drop pintle, and cable release pintle hitches that are seen more readily in industrial applications.

Standard Rigid Pintle –

The standard rigid pintle is the most basic model available, and the most widely used. This pintle comes with a rigid top plate with mounting holes for bolting it to the tow vehicle or trailer. The standard rigid pintle is the most economical to manufacture, and the most widely available. You can buy them just about anywhere. From Amazon and Ebay, to Home Depot, Walmart, Tractor Supply and Autozone.

From $45 +/- for a Buyers Products PH6 rated at 12,000 lbs to $650 for a Premier model 480 rated at 130,000 lbs. Average cost is in the $75-$80 range. There is great variation in the capacity and the costs for these types of pintle hitches.

Combination Pintle / Ball Hitch –

Combination Pintle hitches are a common commercially available pintle hitches targeted for customers that pull various trailers over the road. Pintle ball combination hitches are a hybrid of the standard rigid pintle hitch and a ball hitch. The ball hitches are typically removable/replaceable to allow the operator to switch to the ball size they need, or replace a ball hitch that is worn or damaged.

Ball sizes available are 1-7/8″, 2″, 2-5/16″, 50mm. Capacities Range from Wallace model 23061961 rated at 6,000 lbs to a Buyers Products BH152516 rated at 30,000 lbs. Cost range from $80 to $150 with an average cost of approximately $100

Receiver Mounted Pintle Hitch –

Receiver mounted hitches are designed to slide in and out of a square tubing receiver that is mounted to the towing vehicle. The hitch is then pinned in place by a hitch pin. The benefit of this type of coupler is that they can be quickly changed allowing the operator to tow a myriad of different trailers. Receiver mounted couplers are not limited to just pintle hitches, you can find ball hitches, clevises and many other types.

Receiver can be found to fit 2″ and 2-1/2″ square receivers. Capacities range from the Buyers Products RM5P rated at 10,000 lbs and costing about $65 to a Curt 48010 rated at 20,000 lbs and costing about $100.

Receiver Mounted Combination Pintle / Ball Hitch –

A hybrid of a combination pintle / ball hitch and a receiver mounted hitch. These hitches give the operator great flexibility in what they can tow with the hitch.

These receiver mounted pintle/ball combination hitches range from the Wallace 2079121 rated at 6,000 lbs with a 1-7/8″ ball mounted into a 2″ receiver and costing approximately $150 to Buyers RM122516 rated at 24,000 lbs with a 2-5/16″ ball and fitted for a 2-1/2″ receiver costing about $160.

Channel Mounted Pintle Hitch –

Channel mounted pintle hitches gives the operator the ability to easily change the coupler height by the use of pins. The channel has a back and two sides with multiple holes that allows for the adjustability.

These hitches range from Curts 45919 rated at 10,000 lbs and costing roughly $150 to the ADJ2515 from Wallace rated at 30,000 lbs and costing about $200.

Swivel Pintle Hitch –

Swivel pintle hitches are free to rotate to keep the coupler from binding up. These types of hitches are good for off-road and construction applications. They are typically installed by sticking the coupler shaft through a hole in the vehicle frame and bolting the coupler flange using high strength attaching bolts.

Swivel Pintles can fall anywhere in the range of the 18,000 lb Holland PH-T-60-AOS-L-8 that costs around $280 to Premier’s monstrous 335NTEL that is rated at 110,000 lbs and costs about $700.

Spring Loaded Pintle Hitch –

Similar to the above Swivel Pintle Hitch, Spring Loaded Pintle Hitches have the added benefit of a shock absorbing spring which helps with shock loading when traveling on construction sites and off roading.

Air Compensated Pintle Hitch –

Air compensated pintle hitches use air to take up slack in the coupling which makes for a better ride, reduced wear and tear, and reduced likelihood of un-coupling. They can be used for over the road semi trailers. They can also be used in off-road applications with a swivel loop type tongue. If used in a off-road application, the load rating should be reduced.

You typically see Air Compensated Pintle Hitches at the heavier end of the pintle hitch spectrum. Their costs are some of the highest in the realm of the pintle hitches, so it makes sense that you only see them when the loads get high, and their advantages become more prominent.

The lightest model we investigated is Premier’s 270A, 90,000 lb slack reducing coupler that runs about $600. The largest model was Premier’s 2880ELA hitch rated at 170,000 lbs and carrying a $1,400 price tag.

Drop Pintle / Cable Release Pintle-

These types of pintles are geared more toward industrial applications like in-plant trailers, ground support equipment and things of that nature. The Cable or Ring release versions of the Drop Pintle allows the operator to attach a chain, rope or push-pull cable to remotely control the uncoupling.

Are there different sizes and capacities of pintle hitches?

When it comes to pintle hitches, there are a wide variety in size and capacities. Capacities can range from Wallace’s 23061961, Pintle / Ball Combo rated at 6,000 lbs up to Premier’s 2880ELA air compensated pintle that has a rated capacity of 170,000 lbs. Pintle hitch weights vary from 8 lbs to 64 lbs.

So as you can see, pintle hitches come in many different sizes and capacities. The wide selection makes it probable that you can find the pintle hitch that is right for your specific application.
